PATIENTS FROM OUT OF TOWN AND OUT OF THE COUNTRY
Medical Tourism – an intriguing phrase that is becoming more commonly used as people from all over the world seek treatment in countries that are favorable to the medical issue they are trying to address.
Fertility treatment is accessible everywhere but many countries have forbidden certain types of treatment for people seeking to achieve pregnancy through egg donation; surrogacy; addressing immune issues or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), advanced maternal age – and the list goes on. At New York Fertility Services, at least half of our practice is devoted to international patients who are seeking to start or expand their families through fertility treatment and cannot achieve that in their own country.
Dr. Batzofin is one of the world’s leading fertility specialists in the treatment of third party cases (egg donation, sperm donation and surrogacy) and is also highly sought after by the GLBT population as he and everyone at NYFS center are very friendly and compassionate toward this community. We pride ourselves with our open, nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory approach toward fertility treatment and the end result of a pregnancy and new or expanded family. And with the exchange rate so favorable for Europeans in America, the time has never been better to have an affordable fertility treatment in exciting New York City! Many of the patients who seek treatment from New York Fertility Services reside outside of the New York City area. New York City is one of the most frequently visited destinations in the world. The purpose of this piece is to try to make your visit easier, more enjoyable and ultimately more successful with respect to the main purpose of your visit – achieving a pregnancy.
MEDICAL ISSUES: Because of the way we arrange our treatment cycles, patients will know their tentative schedules well in advance of travel.
Typically, patients will do initial medical screenings with either their regular physician close to where they reside, or with a reproductive specialist with whom we work. The idea is to minimize the time spent in the New York area and the inherent dislocations that would result from being away from home, work and other family members for extended periods of time.
Our office will provide a list of the tests required and all that is needed is for these tests to be performed and the results forwarded to our office by either phone, fax or electronically. In general, these tests will consist of blood tests or ultrasound findings. For those patients being treated by the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (IVF, Egg Donation, Surrogacy, etc.), they will commence their medications at their home and come to New York with the expectation of spending about 7 – 10 days with our program.
Therefore, egg development will already be well under way by the time the patient is first seen in our practice. We will be involved in the monitoring phase prior to the arrival in New York and instructions about dosage adjustments will be given by telephone or email. When you arrive in NYC, we will usually do an ultrasound and blood test the next day and take over all monitoring until the time of egg retrieval or transfer. We will also be able to address any questions at the time of the first visit to our practice. The egg retrieval will usually take place about 3 – 5 days after the first visit and the transfer will happen 3 – 5 days following the retrieval. You will need to be seen almost daily on the latter days of the stimulation. On the days of monitoring, the time you will spend in the office will be about an hour. For the rest of your time in Manhattan, you will be free to participate in any of the large number of activities in and around the city. However, you should not become exhausted trying to take in all of the excitement of the city. You should drink lots of water, avoid excessive alcohol, and not spend the day sunbathing in the summer months, as excessive sun exposure can be harmful to egg development. If you are having alternative complementary treatments (acupuncture, nutrition counseling, massage treatments, or psychological counseling), these services can readily be arranged within your schedule so that you can accomplish everything with a single visit to the office. On the day of the egg retrieval, you should plan to return to your hotel or apartment to rest quietly for the remainder of the day. You should not be alone if at all possible. You can eat regular food on that day and you should avoid alcohol completely. It is not unusual to experience lower abdominal cramping. There may also be slight vaginal bleeding. Sharp pain or excessive bleeding should be immediately reported to the on call doctor or nurse. Also, any dizziness, shortness of breath or vomiting should be reported. The day following the retrieval, you will be notified as to the number of eggs that fertilized. Therefore please make sure we always have updated contact information. At that time, arrangements will be made for your embryo transfer. In the days between the retrieval and transfer, light activities are acceptable. Many patients from out of the area like to take some drives to nearby places. Driving is acceptable. You should “take it easy” and not be involved in extensive hiking or other strenuous activities. “Listen to your body” and get plenty of rest. Keep well hydrated. On the day of the transfer, you should return to your hotel/apartment and take it easy. You do not have to be confined to bed and may go for a walk to a nearby restaurant or theater in the afternoon or evening.
A calendar of treatment will be provided for all post transfer medication, tests and ultrasound examinations. Most out of town patients return home 2-3 days after the transfer. Some who live very far away (e.g Australia), tend to remain in New York City a bit longer. It is generally not necessary to remain in New York until the pregnancy results are available (usually 10 days after transfer). Although obviously, if you are turning your trip into a vacation as well, you should feel free to enjoy yourself in the city that never sleeps, or any other destination you visit. You should at all times remain cognizant that you have undergone an important treatment. The following are activities that should be avoided during your stay: skydiving, horse-back riding, downhill snow-skiing, and scuba diving. Swimming in community pools should be kept to a minimum because of the chemicals and bacteria in the water. If the treatment is successful, you should follow up with your local physician as soon as possible on your return home. NYFS will remain in contact with you throughout the transition period. You will be weaned off all supplemental medications under our direction. If the treatment is not successful, you should arrange a follow-up phone call with the doctor as soon as possible. Questions can also be address by email.
NONMEDICAL ISSUES: Depending on your country of origin, you may need a Medical Visa. Check here for requirements. We can recommend a variety of nearby hotels and furnished apartments in different price ranges that will be suitable for your stay in New York City. Please discuss this with our Director of Practice Relations, Teresa Randolph. She or her assistant will work with you to make sure you are housed comfortably according to your desires and budget. There are many fine restaurants in the area and again Teresa will help you with suggestions and/or reservations. The same is true for any Broadway shows you may wish to see while in New York. Arrangements can also be made for a variety of day trips, museum tours as well as suggested shopping areas. New York really is a destination city. You will not need a car while in the city. Cabs are everywhere. Buses and subway transportation is very accessible and convenient. You can obtain a subway map at any station. If you plan to use the subway often, it’s most economical to purchase a Metro Ticket for approximately $25.00 which will give you about 10 rides. You can purchase these cards in any subway station, using machines located near the entrance to the trains. The subway is very efficient, surprisingly clean and quite safe provided you stay away from some isolated lines after 9.00p.m. Please discuss your likes at the first visit. Most of the staff of NYFS are very familiar with New York City and within 5 minutes, can point you in good directions for your visiting pleasure.
We will welcome your visits to the office at any time, to discuss aspects of your case, medication administration, or making social arrangements to enhance your visit. Bon Voyage and Best Wishes for a Successful Visit!!!!
